Aérospatiale lançou o AS355 Écureuil 2 ('Twin Squirrel') em 1979 como evolução twin do AS350, derivado direto com cabine e dinâmica idênticas, mas com 2 motores Allison 250-C20F. Resposta às exigências de operadores que precisavam de redundância de motor para missões EMS noturnas, executivo IFR e offshore: regulamentos americanos e europeus restringiam single-engine em algumas operações. Variantes evoluíram: F (250-C20F), N (Arrius 1A), NP (Arrius 1A1, rotor 4-pás).
2008 - Substituído pelo EC135/H135 a partir de 2000
Eurocopter encerrou produção do AS355 em 2008, substituído gradualmente pelo EC135 (1996+, depois H135 em 2014) que oferecia twin-engine, IFR, mais cabine e tecnologia mais moderna. AS355 era 'AS350 com mais um motor', enquanto EC135 era plataforma totalmente nova com rotor rígido (herança Bo 105) e Fenestron. Mais de 700 AS355 produzidos vs. 1.300+ EC135/H135.
