How much does a helicopter cost? New and used prices by model
Only Robinson publishes a price list for new aircraft: from $375K (R22) to $1.456 million (R66). For the other models, the price shows up in listings, and most heavy-class ones do not publish a figure.

The price of a helicopter changes more with the category than with the brand: a two-seat piston and a twin-engine transport helicopter are products of different orders of magnitude. There is also a sourcing problem. Among the models Jet Tracker follows, only Robinson publishes a price list for new aircraft. For the rest, the price shows up in listings, and most listings for heavy-class helicopters do not publish a figure.
Robinson's January 1, 2026 price list runs from $375K (R22 Beta II) to $1.456 million (R66). Across public listings with a price, the median asking price is $438K on the R44, $1.41 million on the R66, $2.2 million on the Esquilo (H125) and $2.5 million on the AW109, in samples that range from large to very small.
How much does a new helicopter cost?
Robinson publishes the suggested price of each model, in dollars, with standard equipment. Airbus, Bell and Leonardo do not publish an equivalent price list, and Jet Tracker has no list price verified against a source from those manufacturers. For them, the reference is the listing.
| Model | Type | Suggested price | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Robinson R22 Beta II | Piston, 2 seats | $375,000 | Robinson, R22 Beta II Price List (2026 file; the PDF header shows Jan 1, 2025) |
| Robinson R44 Raven I | Piston, 4 seats | $553,500 | Robinson, R44 Raven I & Clipper I Price List (Jan 1, 2026) |
| Robinson R44 Raven II | Piston, 4 seats | $646,000 | Robinson, R44 Raven II & Clipper II Price List (Jan 1, 2026) |
| Robinson R66 NxG | Turbine, 5 seats | $1,456,000 | Robinson, R66 NxG Southwood Price List (Jan 1, 2026, updated Jul 14) |
| Airbus, Bell and Leonardo | Light turbine and twins | No verified public price list | No figure established by Jet Tracker |
Robinson's list prices do not include options, freight or taxes. For the Brazilian buyer, the cleared helicopter costs more than the list, and Jet Tracker has no established average import-clearance cost; the step-by-step is in the guide how much does it cost to import an aircraft. The price guides by model detail each case: Robinson R44, Robinson R66 and Airbus H125.
How much does a used helicopter cost?
Jet Tracker monitors public listings worldwide. The table shows, by model, how many listings were active on Oct 12, 2026, how many published a price and the median asking price among those that did. It is what the seller wants, not the sale value, and the range includes new aircraft listed by dealers.

Source: Jet Tracker, public listings monitored worldwide and RAB (ANAC, Brazil's civil aviation authority), executive segment, aircraft in operation, base synced Oct 11, 2026, queried Oct 12, 2026. On rows with two or fewer prices there is no median worth reading: the figure is just what appeared. On the Esquilo, Bell 505, Bell 407 and AW109 rows, with 11 to 17 prices, the reading is indicative. Families group variants (the AW109 lumps Power, Grand and GrandNew together; the Esquilo lumps AS350 B2, B3, B3e and H125 together), and a family median mixes generations with very different prices.
The pattern the table shows: the larger and more complex the helicopter, the less often the seller publishes a price. On the R44, 53% of listings (147 of 278) have a price. On the Esquilo, 12% (11 of 89). On the AW139, none of 38. For twins, the price question is usually settled in direct negotiation with the seller or the broker, and Jet Tracker does not see that figure.
How much does it cost to operate a helicopter per hour?
The purchase price is only part of the bill. Jet Tracker's cost engine (version canonical-2026-09, 400 hours per year) estimates each model with a variable cost per flight hour (fuel, maintenance and overhaul reserve) and a fixed cost per year (hangar, insurance, training and, in the profiles that include it, crew).
| Model | Variable per hour | Fixed per year | Total per hour at 400 hrs per year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Robinson R22 | $279 | $9,800 | $304 |
| Robinson R44 | $398 | $17,475 | $442 |
| Robinson R66 | $451 | $38,500 | $547 |
| Bell 505 Jet Ranger X | $646 | $192,500 | $1,127 |
| Airbus H125 (Esquilo) | $707 | $205,850 | $1,222 |
| Bell 407 GXi | $859 | $227,700 | $1,428 |
| Bell 429 | $1,382 | $396,700 | $2,374 |
| Airbus H135 | $1,569 | $413,650 | $2,603 |
| Leonardo AW109 Power | $1,845 | $409,950 | $2,870 |
| Airbus H145 | $1,777 | $508,000 | $3,047 |
| Leonardo AW139 | $2,632 | $624,500 | $4,193 |
Source: Jet Tracker cost engine (canonical-2026-09), catalog estimates, the same ones as on each model's sheet, queried Oct 12, 2026. A caution on the comparison: the assumptions of each profile differ. The profile for the three Robinsons assumes the owner flying, with no hired pilot, while all the other profiles in the table (Bell 505, H125, Bell 407, Bell 429, H135, AW109, H145 and AW139) include a pilot salary in the fixed cost, and those for the H135, H145 and AW139 include two pilots. The gap between the Robinsons and the rest is inflated by that difference in assumptions. These are estimates, not measured operating cost in Brazil.
For the Robinsons, the factory publishes its own estimate (Estimated Operating Cost 2026, 500 hours per year, fuel at $6.51 per gallon): $214.32 per hour on the R22, $319.92 on the R44 Raven I and $331.43 on the Raven II. They include insurance and the major overhaul reserve, and do not include hangar, a hired pilot or taxes. The overhaul reserve is almost half of each estimate: $92.53 per hour on the R22 (43% of the total) and $141.43 on the R44 Raven I (44%).
What weighs on the price besides the model?
Two helicopters of the same model and the same year can have very different asking prices. What explains it:
- Time to major overhaul. On the R44, the airframe and engine are overhauled every 2,200 hours or 12 years, whichever comes first (Robinson, R44 brochure, Feb 2026), and Robinson's estimate for the R22 also reserves a 2,200-hour overhaul. An R44 near the limit carries a bill of about $311K to $328K (Robinson, EOC 2026): it should come off the purchase price.
- Total hours. In R44 listings, total hours alone do not order the asking price: what matters is the distance to the next overhaul and whether it has already been done.
- Life-limited components. Blades, transmissions and gearboxes have a limited life. Ask for the remaining-time report on each one.
- Avionics, options and interior. On the Robinsons, items such as air conditioning ($27,400 on the Raven II), impact-resistant windshield ($16,600) and lithium battery ($8,700) have a list price (Robinson, Jan 1, 2026 lists).
- History and documentation. Maintenance at an authorized shop, a valid Airworthiness Verification Certificate (CVA) and a clean status in the registry (RAB). How to read the registry is covered in the RAB lookup guide.
New or used helicopter: which pays off?
It depends on use. New brings a factory warranty (at Robinson, two years or a thousand hours, according to the R44 brochure), a tailored configuration and no overhaul bill on the horizon. Used delivers the aircraft cheaper and right away, with the risk sitting in what the listing does not show: an approaching overhaul, components with little life left and poorly documented history. In either case, a pre-purchase inspection by an independent shop is what settles the price. Jet Tracker has no established helicopter depreciation series; to compare, use listings of the same model in the aircraft for sale radar.

Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest helicopter to buy?
Among the models Jet Tracker follows, the Robinson R22 Beta II: Robinson's list price is $375,000 new, with two seats. In public listings, R22 with a price (26 of 54) have a median asking price of $295K, from $33K to $463K, including new and very old aircraft (queried Oct 12, 2026). It is an asking price, not a closing price.
How much does a used helicopter cost?
It depends on the model. Across public listings with a price (queried Oct 12, 2026), the median asking price is $438K on the R44 (147 prices), $1.41 million on the R66 (48), $2.0 million on the Bell 505 (17), $2.2 million on the Esquilo (11), $3.25 million on the Bell 407 (16) and $2.5 million on the AW109 (11). On the H135, Bell 429, H145 and AW139 there are two prices or fewer, and no median worth reading.
How much does an Esquilo (Airbus H125) cost?
Airbus does not publish a price list. Across public listings of the Esquilo family, 11 of 89 publish a price, with a median asking price of $2.2 million, from $785K to $3.87 million (queried Oct 12, 2026). The details are in the H125 price guide.
How much does a helicopter flight hour cost?
Jet Tracker's cost engine (canonical-2026-09, 400 hours per year) estimates, per flight hour: R22 about $304, R44 $442, R66 $547, Bell 505 $1,127, H125 $1,222, Bell 407 $1,428, AW109 $2,870 and AW139 $4,193. These are estimates with different assumptions per profile (the Robinsons assume the owner flying, with no hired pilot), not measured operating cost in Brazil.
How much does it cost to maintain a helicopter per year?
It adds up the fixed cost (hangar, insurance, training and, where applicable, crew) plus hours flown times the variable cost. For the R44, Robinson estimates $12,953 per year in insurance on the Raven I and $14,288 on the Raven II (EOC 2026), plus $319.92 and $331.43 per flight hour, at 500 hours per year. Without hangar, a hired pilot or taxes.
Do I need a rating to fly a helicopter?
Yes. The license and rating required to fly a helicopter are in ANAC's RBAC 61, and the class or type rating depends on the model. Confirm with ANAC, Brazil's civil aviation authority, what applies to the model you plan to operate.
