How much does it cost to keep a business jet: complete 2026 guide
Fixed costs exist with the aircraft parked; variable costs rise with every hour flown. On the Phenom 300, Jet Tracker's estimate runs from about $890K per year (200 hrs) to $1.34M (400 hrs).

Buying the jet is the easy part. The acquisition check, however large, is a one-time event. What decides whether the operation is sustainable is the recurring bill: hangar, crew, insurance, fuel, maintenance, fees and depreciation, year after year. The overview of purchase and annual cost is in how much does a jet cost; this guide opens up only the cost of keeping one, in two boxes: fixed cost and variable cost.
Keeping a business jet has two cost parts: fixed costs (crew, hangar, insurance, training, management) exist even with the aircraft parked, and variable costs (fuel, maintenance, fees) rise with every hour flown. On the Phenom 300, Jet Tracker's estimate is about $890K per year at 200 hours and $1.34M at 400 hours. The math only works out if you fly enough to dilute the fixed costs.
How much does it cost to keep a business jet per year?
It depends on the model and how many hours you fly. The table shows the Jet Tracker cost engine estimate for three light jets, at 200 and 400 hours per year, in dollars, the standard currency of business aviation. The math is always the same: annual cost equals fixed cost per year plus variable cost per hour times hours flown. We do not convert to reais because we have no established reference exchange rate.
| Model | Variable per hour | Fixed per year | Annual cost at 200 hrs | Annual cost at 400 hrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Embraer Phenom 300 | $2,267 | $436,250 | about $890K | about $1.34M |
| Citation CJ4 | $2,133 | $368,625 | about $795K | about $1.22M |
| Citation CJ3+ | $2,076 | $333,750 | about $750K | about $1.16M |
Source: Jet Tracker, canonical cost engine (version canonical-2026-09), estimate, queried Oct 11, 2026. Worked example, on the Citation CJ4 at 200 hours: 368,625 + 2,133 × 200 = $795,225. For midsize, super-midsize and long-range jets we do not publish a range in this guide: the estimate for each model is in the cost calculator.
To place the math in the Brazilian fleet, the median year of manufacture of the jets in operation in the RAB shows that light and midsize jets are the oldest (median 2006) and large ones the newest (2012). Age weighs on maintenance, upgrades and insurance.
| Category | Median year of manufacture | Aircraft in operation |
|---|---|---|
| Light | 2006 | 539 |
| Midsize | 2006 | 99 |
| Super-midsize | 2010 | 118 |
| Large | 2012 | 65 |
| Ultra-long-range | 2011 | 41 |

What are the fixed costs of a business jet?
Fixed costs exist even with the aircraft parked in the hangar. It is the bill that arrives every month, whether you fly or not. In the Jet Tracker cost engine (estimate), the annual fixed cost is $436,250 on the Phenom 300, $368,625 on the Citation CJ4 and $333,750 on the Citation CJ3+. The main items:
- Crew. The largest fixed item: salaries, benefits and payroll charges for two pilots (captain and first officer). The figure in Brazil varies by operation, with international flights and a bilingual crew pushing it up. We do not publish a Brazilian salary range.
- Hangar. Space rental varies widely by airport and aircraft size. At busy executive airports, the waiting list and the price go up. The figure in Brazil depends on the airport and the contract, and we have no established range.
- Insurance. Hull and liability. The premium varies with the insured value, the pilots' profile and the use (private or charter). A premium quoted in Brazil depends on the operation and is not published here.
- Recurrent training. Annual simulator training per pilot, at a cost that depends on the model and the training center.
- Aircraft management. Those who outsource the operation to a management company pay a monthly fee covering operational management, paperwork with ANAC, planning and support.
- Subscriptions and programs. Navigation database, weather, onboard connectivity and maintenance tracking.
The central point: before the aircraft leaves the ground even once, the fixed costs are already charging. That is why crew, hangar and insurance need to be quoted for your operation, not copied from an average. The assumptions Jet Tracker uses, and which you can adjust, are in the cost calculator.
How much does each flight hour cost? (variable costs)
Variable costs only exist when the engine is running. In the Jet Tracker cost engine (estimate), the variable cost is $2,267 per flight hour on the Phenom 300, $2,133 on the Citation CJ4 and $2,076 on the Citation CJ3+. The items that go into that math:
| Item | What it is |
|---|---|
| Fuel (Jet A-1) | Burn rises with weight, altitude and speed |
| Airframe maintenance reserve | Provision for inspections scheduled by hour or cycle |
| Engine and APU reserve | Provision for overhaul or a per-flight-hour maintenance program |
| Landing, navigation and handling fees | Airport charges, air navigation and ground agents, in Brazil and abroad |
| Catering and crew expenses | Onboard meals, hotels and per diems on overnights |
Two details that weigh in Brazil:
- Per-flight-hour maintenance programs (such as JSSI's Hourly Cost Maintenance) turn the engine overhaul, an expensive event (JSSI, Mar 2024), into a predictable amount per flight hour. JSSI says the program helps preserve the aircraft's residual value and that the coverage passes to the next owner (JSSI, Mar 2024). That is a claim by the party selling the program: compare the cost per hour with your utilization before signing.
- The dollar is the denominator of almost everything. Fuel, parts, insurance and training are priced in dollars. If the dollar rises 10%, the dollar-denominated share of the cost rises 10% in reais, with nothing changing in the operation.
How do hours flown per year change the math?
Here is the math that decides whether owning a jet makes sense: fixed costs are divided by the hours flown. The more you fly, the lower the cost per hour. The example below uses hypothetical light jet assumptions, $480K in fixed costs per year and $2,400 variable per hour, just to show the effect. It is not a measurement.
| Hours per year | Fixed per hour | Variable per hour | Total cost per hour | Total annual cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 hrs | $4,800 | $2,400 | $7,200 | $720K |
| 200 hrs | $2,400 | $2,400 | $4,800 | $960K |
| 300 hrs | $1,600 | $2,400 | $4,000 | $1.2M |
| 400 hrs | $1,200 | $2,400 | $3,600 | $1.44M |
The reading is direct: flying 100 hours a year costs double per hour what flying 400 does. That is why the less you fly, the more air charter tends to come out ahead, and the more you fly, the more ownership competes. The tipping point depends on the model and the operation: run the math with your own hours.
How much does it cost to keep a Phenom 300 in Brazil? (a practical example)
The Phenom 300 is the light jet benchmark in the Brazilian fleet. Jet Tracker counted 120 Phenom 300 in operation in the RAB on Oct 11, 2026 (58 Phenom 300 and 62 Phenom 300E), first in the light jet ranking.
By the Jet Tracker cost engine (default assumptions: 400 hours per year, Brazil Southeast, fuel at the current price), the Phenom 300 has a variable cost of $2,267 per hour and a fixed cost of $436,250 per year. The math is: total per hour equals variable plus fixed divided by hours.
| Hours per year | Math | Cost per hour | Annual cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 200 hrs | 2,267 + 436,250 ÷ 200 | $4,448 | about $890K |
| 400 hrs | 2,267 + 436,250 ÷ 400 | $3,357 | about $1.34M |
Source: Jet Tracker, canonical cost engine (version canonical-2026-09), estimate, queried Oct 11, 2026. It is the house reference model, not the measured cost of a Brazilian operation. The range varies with each operator's crew, hangar and insurance.
The counterpoint is charter. Jet Tracker has no established Phenom 300 charter rate: request a quote for your routes and compare it with the ownership estimate of $890K at 200 hours per year. Charter avoids the fixed costs, but comes without the asset, without immediate availability and without control of the schedule.
To anchor the example in the price of the asset: among the public listings monitored worldwide, 26 Phenom 300 are listed, 6 with a price, and the median asking price is $9.2 million (range of $4.8M to $10.5M). In Brazil there are 16 listed and 4 with a price, with a median asking price of $10 million: a small sample, an indicative reading. Source: Jet Tracker, public listings monitored worldwide, queried Oct 11, 2026. The model's market and cost detail is on the market tab and the Phenom 300 cost tab, and the hour-by-hour math is in Phenom 300 operating cost per hour.
Which costs almost nobody puts in the budget?
Even those who do the fixed-plus-variable math tend to forget these:
- Depreciation. The aircraft loses market value over time, even parked in the hangar, and that cost only shows up at resale. Estimate the expected loss for your model and year with a market valuation, instead of using a generic percentage.
- Avionics and interior upgrades. Regulatory mandates and a dated interior drag down resale value. One example of a mandate is ADS-B Out, required in the United States, under the American rule (14 CFR 91.225), in certain classes of airspace from 2020.
- Positioning (ferry). Empty flights to pick up passengers or take the aircraft to maintenance count as hours flown and cost as such.
- Fees and red tape in Brazil. Air navigation charges, airport fees, parts import costs and the tax burden on maintenance services weigh on the bill of anyone operating in Brazil. The math of bringing in an aircraft from abroad is in how much does it cost to import an aircraft.
- Opportunity cost of capital. $10 million tied up in a jet, earning zero or depreciating, has a cost: what that money would earn if invested. Few people add it up, everybody feels it.
When does it pay off: buy, fractional or air charter?
There is no single answer, only the right answer for your usage profile. The comparison below is qualitative: we do not publish hour ranges or third-party rates without a named, dated source.
| Model | Who it suits | Typical cost (light jet) | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Full ownership | Frequent use and an unpredictable schedule | About $750K (CJ3+) to $890K (Phenom 300) per year at 200 hrs, Jet Tracker estimate | Full control, immediate availability | All fixed costs and depreciation stay with you |
| Shared ownership (fractional) | Intermediate use, between charter and full ownership | Share of the total cost proportional to your stake, plus a monthly fee | Diluted cost, professional management | Shared schedule, usage rules |
| Air charter | Occasional use | Hourly rate quoted per flight, no figure established by Jet Tracker | Zero fixed cost, zero depreciation, varied fleet | No guaranteed availability at peak times, no asset |
| Jet card | Recurring use of a few hours per year | Prepaid package with a fixed hourly rate | Predictability, no long-term commitment | Capital advanced and terms tied to the contract |
The question that matters is not how much it costs to buy a jet, but how many hours a year I need to fly for owning one to make sense. Those who fly little tend to stay with charter and those who fly a lot tend to win with ownership; in the middle, fractional deserves serious math. In any case, the ownership budget needs to include depreciation, not just fuel. The rules governing fractional and air charter in Brazil are not covered here: the overview of the charter segment, with registry numbers, is in air taxi in Brazil by the numbers.
How do you estimate costs before buying?
The costliest mistake is doing the math backwards: falling in love with the model and only then discovering the budget. The right order:
- Define your real hours per year. Add up the trips from the last 12 months, not the ones you think you will make.
- Estimate the acquisition value with market data, not with the listing price. The aircraft valuation tool returns an estimated value range (an estimate, not an appraisal) with the comparables in plain view.
- Build fixed plus variable in the cost calculator, adjusting crew, hangar and insurance to your operation. They vary widely from one operation to another.
- Add depreciation. Include the expected loss of value for your model, based on a market valuation; it is what separates the realistic budget from the optimistic one.
- Compare with charter and fractional for your volume of hours before signing.
As a first filter against overpaying, compare the asking price with the estimated value. Jet Tracker monitored 1,410 active aircraft listings in Brazil as of Oct 12, 2026, and the list is in the aircraft for sale radar. Also read the picture of the used market.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to keep a small business jet per year?
By Jet Tracker's cost engine (estimate), the Phenom 300 comes to about $890K per year at 200 hours and $1.34 million at 400 hours. A good part of it is fixed cost, which exists with the aircraft parked.
What is the cost per flight hour of a business jet?
The sum of diluted fixed costs and variable costs. In Jet Tracker's estimate, the Phenom 300 has a variable cost of $2,267 per hour and a fixed cost of $436,250 per year: at 400 hours a year the total is $3,357 per hour, and at 200 hours it is $4,448 per hour (variable plus fixed divided by hours).
What is cheaper: owning a jet or using air charter?
It depends on how many hours you fly. The less you fly, the more air charter tends to come out ahead, because you carry no fixed costs or depreciation; the more you fly, the more ownership competes, and shared ownership is the middle ground to evaluate. The tipping point depends on the model and the operation: run the math with your own hours.
How much does a business jet hangar cost in Brazil?
It varies by airport, aircraft size and contract, and Jet Tracker has no established range for Brazil. The hangar assumptions used in Jet Tracker's estimates can be adjusted in the cost calculator.
Does depreciation count in the cost of keeping a jet?
Yes: the aircraft loses market value over time, even parked in the hangar, and that cost only shows up at resale. For your model and year, estimate the expected loss with a market valuation instead of using a generic percentage.
Is buying a used jet worth it to save on maintenance?
Used lowers the acquisition price and the annual depreciation, but it can raise maintenance and upgrade costs, and major maintenance events, such as engine ones, are expensive (JSSI, Mar 2024). The honest math compares the purchase discount with the maintenance history of the specific aircraft.
